By Francine Rivers / Multnomah

Sold into prostitution in childhood, Angel is a bitter woman who trusts no man. But when God tells Michael Hosea to marry her, she learns to love---until fear overwhelms her and she returns to her former life. Can she be redeemed? A skillful retelling of the biblical story of Gomer and Hosea. 464 pages, softcover from Multnomah.

“Simply put, Redeeming Love is the most powerful work of fiction you will ever read”
—Liz Curtis Higgs

“Francine Rivers is one of the most riveting novelists I’ve ever read.” —Patsy Clairmont

These comments by fellow authors state it best. There is no better description of Rivers or her book Redeeming Love. I don’t often agree so wholeheartedly with those who endorse a book, but Rivers is deserving of the accolades she receives for all her books.

This novel tells the Biblical story of Hosea and Gomer in an 1800s setting. Although the book is fiction, Rivers infuses truths such as unconditional love, forgiveness and mercy.

Michael Hosea, a farmer, seeks the heart of God. He obeys God’s will even when it means marrying a prostitute. Angel has never known love as God intended so she doesn’t know how to function in a healthy relationship. Running back to the familiar places and ways is all she knows. All the while Michael models Christ by forgiving, loving, providing and caring for her. After much prayer and by the grace of God, Angel begins to see a better way and chooses to embrace it rather than continuing to flee.

Redeeming Love is more than a mere romance novel. Characters and readers, alike, are pushed to a deeper understanding of love, faith and mercy. The emotion and passion comes off the page and becomes part of the reader. From the heartache and physical pain to the joy and healing, the reader shares the character’s feelings.

Rivers’ book is a good read for a broad audience. You don’t have to be a romance fanatic to be gripped by this tale. For those who desire to always follow God’s prompting, let Michael be your example. For those who have experienced abuse or addictive behaviors, let Angel show you how to overcome. For those who feel unworthy or unforgivable, let Redeeming Love lead you to the One who is waiting to redeem you.

May every reader have a deeper commitment to his/her spouse and to the Lord upon concluding Redeeming Love.
