Writer's Conferences 2010

Just a little FYI.

Let's talk about conferences.

Just because you may attend a large writer's conference every year that does not mean you should confine yourself to just one. There are usually smaller conferences in larger cities closer to you. For example, I live in northeast Missouri and I have opportunity to go to at least 3 other conferences in driving distance. Chicago, ILL Write to Publish Wheaton, Il, Quad Cities Christian Writer's Conference Eldridge, IA and Heart of American Christian Writer's Conference in Kansas City, MO. I take advantage of at least one other conference a year sometimes two. Why?

1) Networking--Networking is a huge part of what we do. Facebook, Myspace etc. is great for that, but nothing can compare to meeting and conversation live. I can't begin to numerate the contacts I have made through writer's conferences.

2) Learning--Techniques you learn from other writers at the conferences you can not get in a brick-and-mortar setting. Professors are great, but they do not always understand the latest trends in writing. Unless your name is Doc Hensley.

3) Experience--You can not recreate the experience you will receive from a writer's conference. Editors that give you opportunities to submit your work without the minutia that other non-attenders will have to wade through, Agents that let you know you're on the right track, authors that share their tips and secrets and attendees that are willing to lend a hand in so many forms and fashions.

I can not stress enough the great importance of making writer's conferences a real part of your writing schedule and budget. If you are not attending them on a regular basis (at least 1 a year) than you are short changing your self and your career.
